The Sedimentation Problem

Most veterinary medications, vitamins, and electrolytes do not stay perfectly dissolved in a large volume of standing water. Given time, particles settle. The concentration at the bottom of the tank is not the same as the concentration at the top. This matters enormously in practice, because the birds or animals drinking early in the day — when the tank is full and the water has been sitting — are drinking from a different solution than those drinking later, when the tank is lower and the settled sediment has been disturbed.

The Contamination Risk

A header tank is an open or semi-open vessel sitting in a warm, humid environment. It is an ideal incubation site for bacterial growth, algae, and biofilm, particularly once a nutrient-rich medication or vitamin supplement has been added to the water. The longer the mixed solution sits in the tank, the greater the contamination risk — not just to the water quality in the tank itself, but to the entire drinking line downstream of it.
